More of the Benghazi Steel Complex Begins to Rise Above Ground

The Benghazi steel complex is beginning to resemble the project it was intended to be, week by week. The foundations are nearly complete, and more steel structures and buildings are popping up everywhere on site, making progress easier to see.

One of the biggest developments is the piling program. For a long time, much of the work was happening underground where the foundations on which every other part of the project depends are being laid. As that stage draws to a close, more focus is naturally turning to the structures that will ultimately form the steel complex.

For the last several days teams have been working simultaneously across several areas. Concrete was poured for the Cooling Tower area. Walls and columns continued upward in the Electrical Room. The CDRI Passivation Silos, Raw Water Basin, Seawater Desalination Plant and Dust Collector F73 are still under construction and reinforcement and formwork works are ongoing. Each of these areas has its own purpose, but collectively they are helping get the plant ready for future operations.

Elsewhere on the site, steel is becoming an ever more frequent sight, slowly. Reduction Area, Pipe Racks and CDRI Warehouses beams and columns installation continues. Finishing works in progress inside the Main Control Building and future 220 kV substation. These aren’t the most visible changes, but they are the kind of work that slowly brings the whole project together.

Every day teams work on different parts of the site, moving their section forward and clearing the way for the next. And that's what keeps the project going. It's becoming more and more noticeable with each update.

The site is changing but there is still a long way to go. The earthworks and foundations that once ruled are slowly being replaced by buildings, steel structures and the infrastructure that will underpin future production. It's a slow grind, but each passing week brings more of the Benghazi steel complex into view.
