Foundation Construction Begins At Planned DRI Complex In Ben
Construction of the Ras Al Mangar complex in Benghazi has commenced a new phase.
The planned Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant, which will be the largest of its kind in the world, has started deep foundation casting, according to one of the project’s partner companies, Tosyali SULB.
The project is being developed by Libya United Steel Company, chaired by Libyan businessman, Ahmed Gadalla, in partnership with Turkish steel producer Tosyali. Upon completion, the complex is expected to become one of the largest industrial developments in all of Libya. The start of foundation work represents one of the first stages of the construction process. In the coming months, the project is expected to accelerate through planning, engineering preparations and eventually construction.
Despite still being at an early stage, this latest development indicates that work on the ground is continuing to move forward at pace. According to the company, construction and engineering teams are currently focused on completing the foundation and supporting infrastructure required ahead of the next phases of construction commencing.
Once this early phase is complete, attention is expected to shift toward the construction of the facility’s main structures and operational buildings. Activity at the site itself has significantly ramped up in recent weeks as teams work to move the project forward at pace. As is often the case for industrial projects of this scale, the foundations and groundwork often take up a considerable part of the overall timeline, before any of the visible parts of the structure can emerge.
The project is of particular interest to observers of Libya's economy because of its scale and its potential to strengthen the country's industrial capacity. Supporters of the development believe it could make a significant contribution to wider economic growth, both in the short term through construction activity and in the longer term through future industrial production and employment opportunities associated with the project.
For now, however, the focus remains on the practical work taking place on site. As with all major industrial projects, the work will be delivered in stages, with each phase building on the one before it.
