Liquid Oxygen Tanks Installed at the Benghazi Steel Complex

Heavy machinery hands over the baton: Major structural work draws to a close as teams pivot to interior finishing and utility installation across the site.

Another major item of equipment for the Benghazi Iron and Steel Complex has now been presented to the Air Separation Unit (ASU) in the form of its liquid oxygen tanks.

Heavy-duty cranes lifted the tanks into place and mechanically installed them at the unit. In time, they will hold the oxygen needed for the CDRI plant and they will help to keep a steady supply when production begins. Oxygen storage is a bit more complicated than it sounds. It will be kept in liquid form inside these tanks at around -183°C. Liquid oxygen can be re-gasified when required by the plant and pumped through the pipeline network to where it is needed .

The tanks also give the plant some breathing room on supply. When demand is low, oxygen can be stored and used when demand is high. The reserve can also be used to hold oxygen if the main Air Separation Unit is taken off-line for scheduled maintenance or an unscheduled shutdown.

The piping will be connected, measuring instruments and safety valves will be installed and the tanks will be hydrostatically and pneumatically tested. Having done that work, the team can begin preparing for trial operation.

Much of the work at the steel complex is visible as buildings and steel structures rise across the site. It’s a different kind of progress. Installation of equipment such as these tanks has to do with preparing the systems that will keep the plant going on a day-to-day basis.

For now the tanks are there and work continues around them. Next up is getting the connections, instruments and testing done so the system is ready for the next stage.
