New Logistics Facility Takes Shape at Benghazi Steel Project

Progress continues to be made on the infrastructure as well as the main production facilities at the Tosyali SULB steel complex in Benghazi.

Among the key developments is the construction of the project’s Cold Direct Reduced Iron (CDRI) Storage Facility, which was designed to safely store direct reduced iron before it moves through the production process. The latest construction update shows that the facility is now approximately 60 to 65 percent complete, with most of its major structural works already finished.

On completion, the storage facility will hold some 140,000 tonnes of CDRI, which is sufficient to help ensure a stable flow of materials and reduce the impact of any interruptions to external supply chains. A covered conveyor tunnel is also under construction for the automatic transfer of material from the storage area to the production units and vice versa, which will enhance efficiency and reduce the reliance on traditional handling mechanisms.

We are also making progress across the wider construction site. Piling works are at 99.74 percent with over 40,000 cubic metres of concrete poured.Installation of structural steel continues to proceed across site with over 1,160 tonnes installed to date. Work is progressing in the Reduction Area, CDRI warehouses, Pipe Rack Area and 220 kV electrical substations. Construction crews continue to work under normal field conditions and established safety procedures with more than 40 pieces of heavy equipment still in operation on the project.

As each phase advances, the project is transitioning from large foundation work to the installation of the structures and systems that will ultimately support steel production. The steady progress in the production facilities and the supporting infrastructure, while there is still a lot of work to do, shows the ongoing development of one of the largest industrial projects in Libya.
