Safety Begins with the People on Site

Safety Begins with the People on Site

The Tosyali SULB project is always busy with lots of activities. There are a number of teams working in different areas of the site and there is heavy machinery moving constantly and the working environment will change as the construction progresses. And that brings with it something as important as the work itself: making sure everyone gets home safely at the end of the day.

This is the idea behind a new safety training program now in place on the project. The Safety and Industrial Security Department has organized a series of sessions on occupational safety and accident prevention with the participation of employees throughout the month of August.

Training is very practical. It looks at situations that people can actually come across during a working day – unsafe practices around machinery and equipment, moving through an active worksite, using protective equipment properly and knowing what to do during an emergency.

Part of the training is learning to see problems early. It’s not necessary for something to become an accident to get attention. Employees are being urged to report hazards and near misses as they see them so they can be resolved before someone gets hurt.

Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Marhoon, who has experience in risk management and industrial safety, supervises the program. Employees have been grouped into nine groups and sessions will run throughout August. They happen later in the day so the training can continue without interfering with the busiest morning activities on site.

The aim is to create what the project calls a Zero Accident Culture. That translates into habits of daily life. Having the right protective equipment, being aware of what’s happening around you, reporting anything that looks unsafe, and knowing how to react in an emergency can all make a difference.

With a site this big, safety cannot reside within one department. It’s often the people closest to the work that are the first to notice something isn’t quite right, which is why empowering employees with the knowledge to recognize risks is an important part of preventing accidents in the first place.

As the project develops, construction at the Benghazi steel complex will evolve. There will be new equipment, new areas to open and different teams going through different stages of work. Because you build safety into the way people work today, it helps everybody be ready for those changes as they come.
