Benghazi’s Steel Future Is Becoming Hard To Miss

Benghazi’s Steel Future Is Becoming Hard To Miss

The project has moved well beyond the groundwork that defined its earlier months. With piling complete, attention has spread across the structures and facilities above ground. Steel columns and beams are being installed, buildings are progressing and the first pieces of operational equipment are beginning to find their place around the complex.

‎

One of the most visible developments is around the CDRI Passivation Silos where work is ongoing on the foundations, walls and columns. Similar work is also underway at the Air Separation Unit, the Water Treatment Plant and the Belt Gallery. The foundation works for the Cooling Tower and Gas Compressor Building meanwhile have now been completed.

‎

Other areas of the complex are also changing fast. Raising steel columns and beams continues in the Reduction Area and Pipe Rack Area, while cladding work is progressing on the Maintenance Building and Oxide Silo. Inside other buildings teams are working on everything from masonry to electrical areas as the pieces come together slowly in the complex.

‎

Another change you see is in the Oxide storage area. Installation has begun on the travelling wheels for the Bucket Wheel Stacker and Reclaimer, which will eventually form part of the site’s material handling operations.

‎

It’s one of those milestones that brings the project that much closer to operating as an industrial complex. It’s no longer just about site prep and structures. More of the equipment that will one day be used there is beginning to find its place.

‎

And at the centre of it all is a growing workforce.

‎

That activity gives the site a very different character to that of the earlier stages of the project. What was once isolated pockets of piling, concrete and foundations is slowly turning into one connected industrial complex. Buildings are going up on completed foundations, infrastructure is connecting different areas and machinery is starting to be seen with the structures built to support it.

‎

As new structures rise and each piece of equipment is put into place, the Benghazi site is beginning to look less like a project under construction, and a little more like the industrial operation Tosyali-SULB is being built to become.
