Global Expertise Meets Local Experience as LCC Modernizes Its Cement Plants

There is a lot that goes into the operation of a cement plant, much of it long before any problem is visible. Equipment needs to be checked, adjusted and cared for carefully, especially if it has been working for years.

This is the sort of work that is going on now at the Libyan Cement Company. The German specialist Polysius has been working with LCC teams at the Benghazi, Hawari and Al-Fataiah plants, looking closely at some of the equipment at the heart of cement production.

A large part of the visit has been focused on the rotary kilns. Technical inspections and alignment work are being carried out by teams looking for mechanical stress and vibration that can affect the performance of the equipment over time. The goal is to catch problems early and ensure the kilns run as reliably as possible.

The visit also comes as other changes are happening at LCC. The company has been upgrading its current facilities while incorporating new technology into its operations. For example, in the Benghazi district, a new MVR vertical roller mill is planned for LCC’s production facilities. The equipment is for grinding of raw materials and is expected to be commissioned in 2027. It’s a different piece of the production process, but it goes in the same direction, which is upgrading the plants while continuing to get more out of the facilities that are already there.

These plants are very familiar to LCC teams as they work with them daily. Polysius has experience with cement-production equipment in various parts of the world. Having both types of experience can be useful, especially when you are working on machinery where small adjustments can make a difference over time.

For LCC, the short-term goal is very simple, which is to keep the plants running smoothly. Better alignment of the kiln will reduce stress on the equipment, prevent unexpected failures and increase its service life. And that, in turn, helps to make production more reliable.

Modernizing a cement plant does not always mean replacing what is already there. Sometimes that means digging into what you’ve got, learning where it can do better and bringing in the right people to help.

That is what this visit is all about. Polysius brings in outside technical experience, LCC’s engineers bring years of knowledge of their own plants, and the work being done now brings the two together.
