LCC Safety Training and Green Care
Besides its daily production activities, Libyan Cement Company has continued to be mindful of the safety of its people and the environment around its facilities including, for example, recent fire safety training for its employees and regular maintenance of its green areas.
As part of the company’s yearly safety plan, employees at the General Administration participated in a firefighting training program conducted by the Occupational Health and Safety Department. The training was designed to give employees a better understanding of how fires can start, how they can be prevented and what to do if they ever face one at work.
The first part of the training was about the basics. Staff were trained to identify the different classes of fire and why one method will not work in all situations. They were also given a briefing on what extinguishing methods to use depending on the type of fire and procedures to follow during an emergency.
Then they had the opportunity to try it for themselves. In the practical part, the employees used different fire fighting equipment and worked out several possible fire situations. This gave them some real experience with the equipment, rather than just reading about it. The exercises involved the staff actively and the aim was to make them more aware of fire risks and know what to do if something should happen.
Another part of the work going on around LCC is much more routine. The company takes care of the trees and green areas around its facilities all year round. This is particularly useful in the vicinity of an industrial site. The trees and plants can help with some of the dust around the facilities and help with better air quality. They make the area a little more comfortable for employees and visitors instead of the whole area feeling just industrial.
Firefighting training and green space management are obviously very different jobs, but they are both part of what happens around LCC outside of cement production. One is about helping employees get ready for things they might have to cope with at work, and the other is simply about looking after the environment where they spend their working days. They may be smaller updates than what happens on the production lines but they are still part of the day to day work going on across LCC's facilities.
