More of the Benghazi Steel Complex Emerges Above Ground

Much of the work had been going on at ground level for a long time, piling, backfilling and preparing foundations. The piling work is nearly complete, and more of the project is beginning to emerge above ground.
Of the 1,601 planned piles, 1,588 have been built. Over one million cubic meters of material have been backfilled and nearly 48,000 cubic meters of concrete poured across the site. Steel installation is also advancing with more than 7,000 tons now in place and it’s becoming easier to see what those numbers really mean around the complex.
Teams in the Reduction Area and CDRI Warehouse are erecting steel beams and columns. Work is also underway at the CDRI Passivation Silos, Water Desalination Facilities, Heat Recovery Building and 220kV Substation, where reinforcement and formwork are being prepared. The Pipe Rack and Conveyor Belt areas have now been poured in concrete.
Meanwhile, it’s not just concrete and steel that’s arriving on site anymore. They are starting to install more of the equipment that will be part of the working plant. An oxygen tank is now at the Air Separation Unit and the stacker and reclaimer equipment has its travel-wheel assemblies in place. Some areas are already starting to go into smaller, more detailed work. Elsewhere heavy construction is taking place with blockwork still underway in the Main Control Building and the control rooms of the 220kV Substation.
The site is busy with so many different jobs going on at the same time. Some teams are working on concrete, some on steel, some on equipment, some on backfill, some on buildings, each part depending on what's going on around it.
There is still a lot of work to do, but the project is reaching a point where the progress is much more apparent. Now there are steel structures going up, equipment being put into position and individual parts of the plant becoming easier to identify, rather than looking across a site dominated by foundations and groundwork.
That transition will continue as more of the foundation work is done and the focus shifts more to the structures, equipment and systems that will make up the finished steel complex.
