From International Headlines to the Construction Site

From International Headlines to the Construction Site

Tosyali SULB is gaining attention outside Libya. Newsweek recently highlighted the project in a story about Benghazi’s growing industrial sector and the rise of a new low-carbon steel supply route from Libya to European markets.

‎

The Newsweek story, The Mediterranean’s New Green Steel Supplier, explores the larger concept behind Tosyali SULB, a new steel complex and private port in Benghazi built not just to make steel in Libya but also to take advantage of the opportunity to connect that production to international markets.

‎

Newsweek looks at where the project is headed, but the latest work in Benghazi shows how that vision is being built on the ground.

‎

Piling is already complete and concrete and structural steel work is in progress. Now there is more of the plant coming up out of the ground and it is much easier to see the size of the development than it was in the earlier stages of construction.

‎

In some of the most important areas, the future plant is also taking shape. Teams are working around the CDRI Passivation Silos, sea water desalination buildings, gas compression units and the 220 kV Substation. Steel columns and beams are being erected in the Reduction Area and along the Pipe Rack. Mechanical work has commenced on

equipment in the oxide storage area.

‎

Another big part of that work is taking place outside the plant proper. Tosyali SULB is constructing a 220 kv transmission line, which will connect the complex with Kogelex Power Generation Station north of Benghazi. That will provide the power necessary to maintain future operation of the industrial facility.

‎

There’s a lot of that infrastructure already in place. The civil works and steel towers have been completed, as well as the underground route that will connect the overhead line to the main feeder at Kogelex. Now the focus moves to the conductors and connection wires, in the run-up to final tensioning and ultimately commissioning of the line.

‎

The timing of the Newsweek piece is therefore of particular note. Tosyali SULB is part of a much larger industrial narrative for Benghazi, says the magazine, and on the ground the ingredients to make that narrative a reality are already falling into place.

‎

The steel structures are going up. Getting closer to being ready for power hookup. Production areas, storage facilities and supporting infrastructure are all advancing in parallel.

‎

The project is attracting growing international interest in what it could mean for Libya as not just as a producer of steel, but as a new industrial link between the Mediterranean and European markets.
